"Beira Mar" is a vibrant homage to the historic neighborhood of the same name in Aveiro, Portugal. Known for its colorful moliceiro boats, narrow canals, and salt pans, Beira-Mar comes to life in Lopes’ layered composition. Using sand, salt crystals, acrylics, and fragments of traditional azulejo tiles, she creates a textured surface that mirrors the tactile feel of the neighborhood’s streets and waterways.
The piece weaves abstract forms with subtle architectural hints—tilted façades, slanted rooftops, and whispers of laundry strung across alleyways. The color palette, dominated by ocean blues, sun-washed yellows, and rusty reds, evokes both nostalgia and movement, capturing the soul of a place caught between tradition and change.
At once a map, a memory, and a meditation, "Beira Mar" invites viewers to drift between the real and the imagined—a poetic reflection of Aveiro’s unique identity through the eyes of one of Portugal’s rising contemporary voices.
